Artist Mira Gandy will present a collection of new works, entitled "Art
Goes Disco," at the Downtime Club, 251 W. 30th St., on Friday
March 25, at 7 p.m. The show will run through April 8.
Gandy, recently a part of a group show featuring 30 young Black artists
at the Gallery Annex, will be showing oil paintings and mixed media.
Past shows include her one-woman show "Faces of Beautiful Women
of Color" at B. Smiths Rooftop Café. Gandy, a young
African-American artist, says, "My goal is to create an image
of women of color that does not put them in the usual stereotype. Using
a combination of realistic features, abstract forms, mixed medium and
bold colors, I try to express a different representation of my sisters."
Gandy, a graduate of Music and Art High School, continued her education
at the Amercan College in Paris, where she studied art history. Upon
her return to the States, she took classes at School of the Visual
Arts. She was recently commissioned to do a memorial portrait for the
late writer Frederick D. Murphy, which is currently housed in the Schomburg
Museum.
Collectors of her works include such celebrities as actresses Clarice
Taylor, Melba Moore, Toukie Smith, singers Dionne Warwick, Queen Latifah,
talk show host Rolonda Watts and restaurant owner Barbara Smith.
